Alert: July 1 Deadline to Join State Health Plan Network

For those who serve members of the State Health Plan, the deadline to apply to be part of the plan’s new network is July 1. This new network, which will take effect Jan. 1, 2020, replaces the Blue Options PPO that State Health Plan members currently use. If you do not complete the signature page for the new NC State Health Plan Network by the July 1 deadline, you will be considered out of network for the State Health Plan members.

You can review the contract, network participation agreement and reimbursements for in-network services and begin the sign-up process here. Then, you may email the appropriate signatures to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) at NCSHPNetworkContracts@bcbsnc.com no later than July 1, 2019, to be considered in network for State Health Plan members for the 2020 plan year.

If you currently participate in Blue Options PPO but elect not to participate in the North Carolina State Health Plan Network after Dec. 31, 2019, you will not be removed from Blue Cross NC’s PPO networks. However, the North Carolina State Health Plan will be excluded from the Blue Options network as of Jan. 1, 2020.

Be aware that BCBSNC will not be mailing or emailing new contracts for the State Health Plan network.

Inviting Applicants to the NEW NCMS Policy Committee

In the past, the NCMS House of Delegates developed and adopted policies to guide the Society’s work. Since our governance changed in 2016, the NCMS Board of Directors have been responsible for reviewing old policies and establishing new ones. Recognizing the need for broader member input and discussion, the Board is establishing a new NCMS Policy Committee to provide policy direction to the Board of Directors consistent with our mission.

We are seeking NCMS members willing to serve on this committee. Please review the committee charter, which outlines the responsibilities in more detail. The committee will likely meet in person in Raleigh two to three times a year for two to three hours. The first meeting will be in August 2019.

If you would like to be considered for service on this important committee, please send your curriculum vitae and the answers to the following questions to NCMS Director of Health System Innovation Kristen Spaduzzi at kspaduzzi@ncmedsoc.org. The deadline to apply is June 14.

Please respond to the following questions as part of your application:
1. Why are you interested in serving on the Policy Committee?
2. What attributes will you bring to the committee to help ensure successful policy development?

If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Kristen at the above email or Senior VP, Health System Innovation and Deputy General Counsel Melanie Phelps at mphelps@ncmedsoc.org. You also may call 919-833-3836 and ask to speak to Kristen or Melanie.

Leadership College Alumnus Creates Scholarship Fund

Blaine Paxton Hall, MHS-CL, PA-C, a Kanof Institute for Physician Leadership 2008 Leadership College alumnus and a current NCMS Foundation Board member, has created the Blaine Paxton Hall Scholarship Fund for deserving Sandhills Community College students. Preference will be given to students who, upon graduation from high school, lived in a children’s home or foster care, and receive no financial support from parents or any family members.

Blaine recounts his personal story in a moving essay that explains why he wants to help others with similar challenges. Read his story.

As he relates: “It is supremely satisfying to assist young persons in obtaining his/her education, and by making something good out of the circumstances of my life, to relieve suffering, to promote understanding, hope and inspiration.
