This program provides a critical framework for clinicians based on economics, finance and leadership development. With this framework, graduates are provided the necessary vocabulary for the business realm and are equipped to take on greater leadership positions in their career.

The curriculum is designed with greater emphasis on deeper leadership development and skills that include strategic planning, negotiation and financial literacy and application. The program is a year-long course that spans over four weekends across the state of North Carolina. The program involves on-site visits to health care organizations across the state. HCLM is also project-based and participants will have the opportunity to identify current and future needs and/or challenges and develop and design new and innovative solutions to address these.

HCLM Testimonials

Stephen Small, MD, MBA

“HCLM was definitely a springboard to my MBA! I felt very prepared because the content felt like an extension of the HCLM curriculum. In my opinion, the leadership portion of HCLM was the most impactful because it revealed my leadership blind-spots and helped me to understand what I needed to do to become the leader that I wanted to be!”

“I wasn’t expecting the amount of personal development [in HCLM]. I felt my self-awareness was decent, but HCLM took it to a different level. It made me open myself up in a bigger way.”

“Participating in HCLM has been a rewarding experience. Through the business strategy and finance focused curriculum, I’ve gained tools to view my practice through a different lens, that I anticipate will lead to better informed decision making.”

“My training in the HCLM was extremely valuable in today’s health care setting. You need to be able to speak the language of business, politics, and medicine now that value is being put back in the hands of physicians. The HCLM program gives you the tools not only to speak business, but to innovate in the healthcare marketplace to improve it for our patients.”

“It was interesting, and informative, to interact with colleagues from around the state. The instructors were engaging and knowledgeable and provided real world insights into how medicine is changing. Those insights will be key in helping physicians navigate the challenges ahead.”

“HCLM is a unique opportunity to gain broad exposure to important topics not taught during traditional medical training. The experience is enriched by a well-planned cohort design. This allows for an open exchange of experiences and insight from physicians and physician assistants who join together from multiple specialties and geographies during the HCLM journey.”
