HB 277 Transformed into Naturopathic Medicine Study Bill

This bill was transformed into a Naturopathic Study Bill in the Senate Health Care Committee on June 22, 2017. The new version of the bill can be found here: HB 277 – Naturopathic Study.

Sen. Joyce Krawiec (R- Forsyth) presented this bill in the Senate Health Care Committee.

This bill would establish a work group to make recommendations for the oversight of naturopathic medicine in North Carolina. This group would report their findings to the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Health and Human Services.

The work group would include the following individuals:

  • 2 naturopathic doctors, selected by the NC Association of Naturopathic Physicians
  • 1 medical doctor, who has knowledge of naturopathic medicine selected by the NC Medical Society
  • Chairperson of the NC Medical Board
  • Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services

The work group’s recommendations would include the following:

  • Identification of an approved program
  • A scope of practice for naturopathic doctors
  • Whether the practice should include the practice of medicine or surgery

Findings would be reported on or before January 31, 2018.

This bill would add one representative of the Division of Adult Correction Juvenile Justice Department of Public Safety to the Prescription Abuse Advisory Committee.

This bill was passed on the calendar for March 28, 2017.

This bill passed second and third reading in the House on March 28, 2017.

This bill will now move to the Senate.


This bill was referred to the Senate Rules and Operations Committee on March 29, 2017.

This bill was withdrawn from committee on May 23, 2017.

This bill was re-referred to Senate Health Care Committee on May 23, 2017.

This bill was transformed into a Naturopathic Medicine Study Bill on June 22, 2017.
