Open Positions:

Title:    Title TBD, Political Fundraising and Grassroots Advocacy

Reports to:   VP, Advancement & Donor Relations

Works in coordination with:  External Affairs & Membership Services

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience: Two years of experience in government relations, public policy or political fundraising, with preference given to political fundraising and grassroots engagement.

Education: Four-year degree in government, political science, health care, or related field.

Other: Professional, energetic self-starter. Must possess excellent organizational, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills, including public presentation skills. Knowledge of grassroots advocacy efforts, trends, and the legislative process. Proficient in Microsoft Office; membership database software, such as Blackbaud’s NXT; social media platforms; and grassroots specific software, such as Muster. Knowledge of QuickBooks and campaign finance software a plus. Able to travel independently. Ability to meet deadlines, take initiative, assume project responsibility, and prioritize work under pressure. Must possess flexibility and stress tolerance. Must be capable of working as part of a team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

    1. Guide the implementation of the NCMS strategy related to grassroots activities and political advocacy.
    2. Develop, coordinate, and implement a political advocacy strategy, in coordination with internal departments, to advance the organization’s mission and grow member involvement in the political process.
    3. Provide primary staff support for the NCMS PAC (Political Action Committee) and NCMS managed specialty society PACs.
    4. Manage expense budget for each PAC and ensure that PAC bank accounts are reconciled to QuickBooks and campaign finance software.
    5. Meet established fundraising goals.
    6. Develop and implement opportunities for peer-to-peer fundraising among members, including but not limited to, in-person and virtual special events.
    7. Encourage members to attend political fundraisers and be involved with campaigns. Coordinate these activities with the NCMS External Relations team.
    8. Strictly adhere to all laws and regulations applicable to political action committees and political advocacy.
    9. Develop and maintain a working knowledge of the issues affecting the practice of medicine that can be impacted through political and legislative advocacy.
    10. Develop initiatives that: a) educate members about political involvement; b) establish strong working relationships with politically and legislatively active North Carolina physicians and PAs; and c) cultivate interest among members in grassroots political action, including political contributions and candidate relations.
    11. Educate members and encourage member engagement by making presentations to county medical societies, specialty societies and other physician groups in North Carolina.
    12. Organize, implement, and participate in, as necessary, legislative advocacy events, such as White Coat Day events at the NC General Assembly and meetings with legislators.
    13. Maintain an attitude of nonpartisanship in promoting the health policy goals of the organization.
    14. Conduct all political grassroots activities, including fundraising, in collaboration and coordination with the NCMS External Relations team, outside government relations counsel and specialty society lobbyists.
    15. Assist in the preparation of items for NCMS communications channels, including social media and website blog.
    16. Assist in the development of educational materials, position papers and fundraising materials covering political, legislative and regulatory issues for use by grassroots volunteers.
    17. Staff NCMS PAC Board of Directors and other NCMS committees that may be assigned.
    18. Represent NCMS at meetings and events.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Maintain a positive proactive and cooperative attitude among all employees to help create and support an environment that encourages and advocates employee teamwork to achieve maximum potential of the NCMS programs and activities.
    2. Actively participate in and provide support for the NCMS membership recruitment and retention efforts by promoting the NCMS during work duties; communicating the awareness of NCMS programs and purpose to members and non-members; and participation in periodic membership recruitment activities undertaken by the NCMS.
    3. Frequent evening meetings and occasional weekend meetings.
    4. Additional duties as assigned.
