Review Your Data Before It’s Made Public

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) encourages you to review the data they have collected as part of the Open Payments program, previously known as the Sunshine Act. This is a federal transparency program enacted by Congress in 2010 that requires that CMS collect and publicly report data about payments, ownership or investment interests between drug and device manufacturers and physicians and teaching hospitals.

CMS is required to give you an opportunity to review the data for accuracy. In order to review the data and make corrections if necessary, physicians and teaching hospitals must first register in CMS’ Enterprise Portal.  Then, starting in July, they must register in the Open Payments system (via CMS’ Enterprise Portal).  This voluntary review and dispute period is open for 45 days.

Read the letter from Richard Wild, MD, JD, Chief Medical Officer, CMS, Atlanta Regional Office urging physicians to register and review the information. Go to the CMS Open Payments site for more information.
