Teen Suicide Prevention

Ranking as the third leading killer of adolescents, suicide is becoming a more prevalent killer of young adults every year. The Physician Assistant Section of the North Carolina Medical Society has dedicated the past three years to helping to reduce the number of teen deaths due to suicide by offering healthcare providers educational training in recognizing the warning signs of at-risk teens.

Teen Suicide Prevention Partners

Risk Factors for Suicide:

  • Depression, bi-polar disorder, or other mental illness

  • Significant loss, such as through divorce, death, loss of health

  • The break-up of a relationship

  • Pressure to succeed in school, sports, etc.

  • Family problems

  • Low self-esteem

  • A history of sexual, physical, or verbal abuse

  • Problems with peers, including bullying
    behavior

  • Family history of suicidal behavior

  • Someone close to the individual has committed suicide
