Safe Haven Law

Safe Haven Law -- Surrendering Infants for Adoption Legally and Safely

The Health Law Section of the NC Bar Association has developed a toolkit to assist health care providers and educators with educating women about the Safe Haven Law passed by the NC General Assembly in 2001. The law allows parents to legally give up an unwanted infant anonymously and safely. Its purpose is to encourage parents to deliver the infant to a safe place instead of abandoning it in a way that may jeopardize the health of the infant. The NCMS is working with the Women's and Children's Health Section of the Division of Public Health to produce a manual titled Safe Surrender of Newborns. For more information or to access the toolkit, visit the NC Bar Association website.
