NCMS Hurricane Florence Response

The North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) hopes those impacted by the devastation and loss of Hurricane Florence are beginning the path to recovery and rebuilding. To that end, the NCMS continues to respond to the needs of our members and their patients in the aftermath of the storm.

  • For the latest information on accessing resources to rebuild as well as getting patients the care they need even if they have lost their insurance card or prescription information or have been displaced to another area of the state, visit our Disaster Preparedness and Resource Center. The information compiled on that site will be updated frequently, so check back often. And please let us know if you or your colleagues have been impacted by the storm and how we can reach you. Call or email Belinda McKoy, bmckoy@ncmedsoc.org or 919-833-3836 x142.
  • The NCMS Foundation established a Disaster Relief Program, which is collecting donations to help practices financially as they struggle to return to treating patients in their communities as soon as possible. Learn more about this program and how you can contribute. In less than a week, the program has collected just over $3,000. See below for the list of generous donors. Applications to request help through this program will be available shortly. Watch your email for updates on how to apply for a grant.
  • During the storm and immediately afterward the NCMS helped coordinate placing medical personnel where they were most needed by soliciting volunteers for the Red Cross disaster relief efforts and working closely with the NC Health Care Association and other medical organizations to relieve weary staff that had stayed on to care for patients at hospitals in Wilmington and other areas hit hard by the hurricane. Thank you to all those selfless individuals who put the needs of patients first.

Central to the NCMS’ mission is to step in with appropriate help for our members and their patients wherever and whenever necessary and we will continue to do so. Please contact us with any questions or if you have a storm story to share with your colleagues please call or email Belinda McKoy, bmckoy@ncmedsoc.org or 919-833-3836 x142. We would like to hear how Hurricane Florence affected you and how we can help.
