Make Your Voice Heard on State Health Plan Directive

The North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) recently sent an Action Alert to members in response to State Treasurer Dale Folwell’s May 14th announcement that he expects Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC), as administrator of the State Health Plan (SHP), to reduce rates paid to health providers by 15 percent in the insurer’s upcoming round of 2018 contract negotiations.

The alert asks you to contact the SHP Board members directly to ask them to reconsider the strategy originally announced by the Treasurer, and to choose instead to collaborate with providers to control costs and improve the health of SHP members.

Folwell’s announcement leaves many questions unanswered and the NCMS continues to gather important details to better understand how and whether the Treasurer’s expectations can be realized. The more we learn, the more concerned we are by the disruption in care and consequential adverse health impacts this could mean for patients when their physicians are unable to accept such a major reduction from the Plan. The NCMS has been working broadly and successfully for more than eight years to implement health financing and delivery models that reduce spending and lower the need for health care services.

If you haven’t yet taken action you may access the pre-populated message here. If you have not yet signed up to use our Action Center tool, you first will be prompted to register your contact information. The message will automatically be sent to the SHP Board of Trustees. Feel free to share patient stories to help make the case.
