Health Care Reform Symposium Examines Impact of PPACA

Approximately 200 people attended the Triangle Business Journal (TBJ) Symposium, Health Care Reform: Myth vs. Facts, on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 in Raleigh. NCMS partnered with TBJ in publicizing the event. Physician Tim Carey, MD, Director of the UNC-CH Shep’s Center served on a panel that also included Brad Wilson, CEO, BCBSNC; Mary Beth Johnston, Co-Chair, Healthcare Practice Group, K&L Gates; Adam Searing, Director, Health Access Coalition, NC Justice Center; and Douglas Vinsel, President Duke Raleigh Hospital.

In addition to Dr. Carey, other NCMS members at the forum were Robert H. Bilbro, MD; Don W. Bradley, MD; Craig N. Burkhart, MD;, and Warren J. Pendergast, MD. NCMS staff members Alan Skipper, Amy Whited and Mike Edwards also attended.

Much of the discussion focused on how the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act would change health care delivery and impact large and small business employers. Panelists agreed that Congress will likely make more changes in the coming months in order to gain desired outcomes such as cost control, quality and access to care.
