Friday, January 13, 2017 | 8:30am-4:45pm
New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington, North Carolina
Caring for a sick child is one of the most stressful events in a parent’s life. For the medical staff, dealing with not just the patient but their surrogate decision makers can be a challenging endeavor. The higher the anxiety the more likely that perplexing scenarios will take place between the parents and their medical team. For the physician, the task of providing relevant medical facts in a manner that can be easily understood, discussing treatment options, balancing prognosis and hope can be a daunting task. For the nursing and ancillary staff dealing with the patient’s family members who are in crisis can place added stress in taking care of a child with complex needs. This conference aims to provide practical information and tools to assist healthcare staff in communicating with patients and caregivers during their day to day interactions that will foster cooperation and give the family much needed sense of support and understanding.
