Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) is spreading the word about changes to their formulary coverage that will likely effect many of your patients, especially those on ACA plans. An overview of the changes is available here.
Since BCBSNC is now the primary ACA insurer for the state with coverage in all 100 counties, many patients who had coverage under other insurers may see differences in 2017. For instance, diabetic patients who change to BCBSNC in the coming year, may need to switch insulin products since BCBSNC exclusively offers insulin from drug maker Novartis for those on ACA plans. Also, Walgreens, CVS and Target along with some independent pharmacies are considered in-network for those on BCBSNC ACA plans, while Harris Teeter, Kroger and Walmart are out-of-network pharmacies.
The details are outlined on the BCBSNC website here.
