Beware of This ‘Federal Jury Duty’ Scam

A North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) member recently contacted our Solution Center to let us know about a scam that affected several physicians in Raleigh. We wanted to pass along the details in case you, too, get a call at home from someone claiming that you will be arrested unless you report for federal jury duty. When this physician’s husband reported to the federal courthouse in Raleigh, he met several other physicians who had received similar calls. They filed police reports with the Raleigh City Police Department as instructed by an officer in the civil processing unit.

The North Carolina Attorney General’s office has a hotline to report if you think you have been the victim of a scam. Call toll free within North Carolina at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM (1-877-566-7226) or (919) 716-6000. The office also publishes a booklet listing some of the more common scams to help consumers guard against being victimized. Browse the booklet.
